99betWith less than 48 hours until the MLB trade deadline, the San Diego Padres are among the many rumors. From their interest in Marcell Ozuna and Luis Robert Jr., to their willingness to move Dylan Cease, A.J. Preller has the Padres involved at the deadline.
merryphAfter a new report from Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the Padres are discussing potential trades involving All-Star closer Robert Suarez. The 34-year-old is involved in trade talks and could be moved at the deadline.
'Padres All-Star closer Robert Suarez is being discussed in trades, rivals say.' Rosenthal writes. '... Padres pen is the best, but they'd likely want to add another reliever if they trade Suarez.'
San Diego would consider moving on from Suarez for the same reason that they're considering moving on from Cease: both are set to be free agents at the end of this season.
It's a little different for Suarez, as he has two player options for 2026 and 2027, totaling $16 million, which he is expected to decline. Set to hit free agency, the Padres could look to get something in return for him at the deadline.

With the reliever market looking robust, the Padres getting involved as a seller would be a good way to recoup value if they do decide to land a top-tier outfielder or catcher at the deadline.
If they do move on from Suarez, he's likely to bring back a solid return. This season, he has a 3.50 ERA, 46 strikeouts, a 1.01 WHIP, and an MLB-best 30 saves in 43.2 innings pitched.
Suarez has had some struggles this season, evident by his four blown saves, but overall, he's been a positive force for the Padres. As he's set to hit free agency, the Padres won't land a haul for him, but the return for a rental is likely to be decent.
San Diego is open to moving Suarez thanks to their incredible bullpen and his impending free agency at the end of the year. Preller and the Padres are discussing him in trades, and could move on from the veteran closer after four years in San Diego.
